 As you may have noticed I have not posted on this blog in nearly 10 years! (I did actually loose access to it for awhile due to having multiple Google accounts.) Warped Milwaukee 2014 Fiber Arts Show

Here's my applique art quilt entry for the Warped Milwaukee 5th Annual Fiber Arts Exhibition at the Jazz Gallery, 926 E Center ST, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The theme is "Motif," and I tend to do a lot of Day of the Dead-themed art and have wanted to do a larger format (11 x 14" is large for me) fabric collage.  This is raw-edged applique with shapes being cut from my hand-painted fabric (except for the light blues which are commercial print colors) and heat-fused to a black background and then secured with free-motion machine quilting.  I like to use brightly colored variegated thread for the quilting.

The show opens Friday, November 14, 2014 with a reception from 6-9 p.m.and will be up through November 30. The gallery has limited hours but is generally open on Tuesday nights 6-8 p.m. (for live jazz sessions) and Saturdays 12-5 p.m. but also check the Jazz Gallery website for other events.  On the last weekend of the show, the gallery will be open Nov. 29-30, 2014 from 12-5 p.m. for the Crafters Marketplace, which I will also be participating in, where local artists will be selling handmade items, if you want to get your holiday shopping done!  Both events are organized by the ABK Weaving Center and coordinated by Susan Buss.

Books Unbound II

I just dropped off my pieces today for the show "Books Unbound II" by members of the Binders Guild book arts group here in Milwaukee. The show will be up November 9-30, 2014 at the Marian Gallery in Caroline Hall at Mount Mary University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. (See also my previous blog post.) There will be quite a variety of handmade books and other book-related art. We each had to do a 12x12" canvas around the theme of story-telling so I used a quote from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice for my collage.
 
We also each did an abecedarium or alphabet book. Mine is an accordion book "A to Z Tangles" with 2" square pages, each featuring a different handdrawn tangle pattern. The back of each page has the designer's name listed for each pattern. I had a lot of fun drawing these, but some letters it was difficult to choose just one pattern!

 We also each did a piece inspired by the theme "Cabinet of Curiosities." For mine I added to an assemblage piece "Inexplicable Syncopation" that I had done in 2007 for a show at the Bay View Book Arts Gallery, because I had never felt that the piece was quite completed (and I still don't but I had a deadline).

Work in Progress for Upcoming Shows

As it has been some months since my last post, here's an update on a few things I've been working on.  You can also "Like" my Facebook page, as I am somewhat better about posting little updates and photos there. (Somewhat!)

 I'm submitting work for two shows this fall and also participating in the Crafters Marketplace again.

Opening first is "Books Unbound II," the second show by the Binders Guild book arts group. (The first show was in 2010, and you can see photos here.) This year's show will be up November 9-30, 2014 at the Marian Gallery on the Mount Mary University campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The book on the far left in the announcement above is one of my books, and I will try to post more photos in a future blog post. UPDATED:  Also see my Books Unbound II Flickr set here

Each participant is also doing a 12 x 12 inch canvas for the show, and this is mine:

I'm also planning to participate in the annual Warped Milwaukee fiber arts show again this year and am working on my submission this month (as the application is due October 31!), and you can see a sneak peek here:

The fiber arts exhibit will be up from November 14-30, 2014 in the Jazz Gallery, 926 E Center ST, Milwaukee, and on the last two days of the show November 29-30, 2014 (the weekend after Thanksgiving), I will also be in the Crafters Marketplace there as well. Milwaukee Artist Trading Card Exhibit

It's been a few months since I've blogged, but I'll try to get back in the swing now that spring is here! I've got a show up this month at the Creative Arts Resource & Network of Western Racine County (CAR&N) gallery, 220 E Main Street, Waterford, Wisconsin, featuring Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) made by members of the Milwaukee ATC group (including myself).

Although we only take up one wall of the gallery, there are 169 ATCs by 55 different artists. I received the majority of the cards in trade at the Milwaukee ATC monthly live trade meetings. (See our group webpage for more information.) Many of my ATCs included were from my ATC-a-Day project in 2006-2007 because the majority of ATCs that I've made have been traded away to other people!  But I got all these fabulous cards in return:

There's quite a variety of art from traditional painting and drawing to collage and assemblage using everything from fabric & fibers to recycled objects and wire and glass. The display case in the first photo above includes some fragile and three-dimensional ATCs.

If you are in SE Wisconsin or Northern Illinois and interested in seeing the show in person, this Google map shows the location of the gallery as well as some local laces to eat nearby. The actual gallery hours vary (and are not what is listed on their website). They are generally open Tuesday-Friday 10-4 and Saturday 10-3, and are sometimes open Wednesday & Thursday evenings until 8 pm but they may close early some days if they do not have any visitors. If you are driving from a distance, I would recommend calling ahead to make sure that they will be open when you are planning to go. Besides the Milwaukee ATC group's display, you can also see paintings by Jeremy Uglow, photographs and collages by Nick Torkilson, and jewelry by Jeanne Baas. The ATC portion of the show will be up until about May 23, 2014.

Warped Milwaukee 2013 Artists & Hours

Following up on my last post about the 2013 Warped Milwaukee 4th Annual Fiber Arts Exhibition, if you don't live in the Milwaukee area, you can currently see a slide show of the exhibit on the Riverwest Artists Association website here. The Jazz Gallery is located at 926 E. Center Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Please note that the Jazz Gallery is dependent on volunteers to keep the doors open, and the above schedule may be subject to change. There is a suggested $5 cover for the Saturday night Jazz Series. Otherwise admission is free, but donations to the Riverwest Artists Association are appreciated.

Warped Milwaukee 2013

Can you believe it's November already? Time for Warped Milwaukee's Annual Fiber Arts Exhibition! I have two pieces in the show, which opens this evening, November 9, 2013 at the Jazz Gallery, 926 E Center ST, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and will be up through December 7, 2013. Above is a sneak peek detail of my art quilt "Three Sunflowers" from the show.

Because the Jazz Gallery relies on volunteers to keep the doors open, the gallery schedule will vary, and I'll post the open times when I know more, but it will generally be open Saturdays 12-5 and Tuesdays 6-9 pm with additional hours expected on Sunday afternoons depending on volunteer availability. (On Tuesday nights they have live jazz.)

On the weekend of December 7 -8, 2013, I'll also be participating in the associated Crafter's Marketplace at the Jazz Gallery selling handmade goodies in time for your holiday shopping. A percentage of the sales benefits the ABK Weaving Center.

UPDATED 11/15/13 Here is the Jazz Gallery schedule showing various times when it will be open for jazz concerts, winter farmers' market etc. Warped Milwaukee volunteers will also be gallery sitting from 12-5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays when the gallery is not already open for another event as well as Nov 29, the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Bad Influence: Day of the Dead 'zine

Lisa Vollrath has published another issue of her occasional 'zine Bad Influence October 2013: Day of the Dead (see sidebar at left), and she was kind enough to ask me to contribute. I have a set of 12 drawings, one for each month for a "Year of the Dead" plus a skull mini-art quilt. Here's a sneak peek detail of my August drawing:

Adventures in Paper Marbling

At the end of June, the Milwaukee ATC group had Betsy Rasmussen of Ruth Ross Designs teach us paper marbling, and if you live in the Milwaukee area, we all highly recommend taking a class from Betsy (and you can find some of her upcoming workshops listed here).
 
She had all the workstations, paper, paint and sizing set up ahead of time so we just had to show up and follow directions to get fantastic results! Here's what I made:


Don't ask me what I plan to do with these yet. I haven't been able to bring myself to cut them up!

Crochet Cthulhu and Other Yarn Craziness

I didn't mean to start crocheting again, but last year in one of my half-hearted attempts to clean and organize, I pulled out the box labeled "Knit & Crochet supplies" and thought I should get rid of this because I haven't knitted or crocheted in years. Then next thing I know I'm reading books on crochet flowers and amigurumi and then I'm pinning hat patterns on Pinterest and buying more yarn. My rationalization is that I needed to make things to sell for the MARN Artibles and Warped Milwaukee holiday craft shows, of course... The nice thing about crochet is that small projects are easy to carry around and work on in my spare time.

I had made a crochet Cthulhu as a (belated) Christmas present for my dear big brother, starting with the pattern posted on the Cthulhu Crochet blog but adding more rows and stitches to get the shape I wanted. Then some of my brother's co-workers also wanted Cthulhus (see above line up & what is the plural of Cthulhu?). Apparently they have "Take your Cthulhu to work" day there. If you're interested in a basic Cthulhu, check out my Etsy shop. Not satisfied with that original pattern, I also decided to add some legs and a tail, so I now have a deluxe Cthulhu available as well.

I was also looking for a fun hat pattern and found this design by Leslie Nelle-Urinyi of Wool Mountain Studio on Etsy. I made this hat to donate to the Southeast Wisconsin Alzheimer's Association fundraiser this spring as they had a wearable art auction.

So obviously that box of knit and crochet supplies did not go away. If I am a better blogger this summer, I'll take some photos of the experiments in yarn made from old t-shirts....

Binders Guild Book Arts Group Open House, April 27, 2013

If you live in the Milwaukee area and are interested in anything related to handmade, handbound and/or altered books, the Binders Guild book arts group will be having an open house for folks interested in joining the group on April 27, 2013 from 10 am to 12 noon at Mount Mary College. You don't have to be an expert book artist to join.

The group meets in Room 446 of Notre Dame Hall. You can find a map of the campus here: http://www.mtmary.edu/pdfs/purplebars/visitors/campusmap.pdf Enter from 92nd Street and park in Lot B. Follow the sidewalk to the covered walkway between buildings #1 (Notre Dame Hall) and #2 (Caroline Hall) on the map. Turn right to use the side entrance to Notre Dame Hall and take the stairs or elevator to the 4th floor. (Room 446 is near the elevator on that side of the building.)

Among the projects that group members are working on with a goal of putting on a show at Mount Mary in the fall of 2014:

Very Tiny Art

This winter my friend Mel Kolstad invited me to participate in an exhibit she was organizing to benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness, entitled "Through Mia's Eyes." In 2011, Mel's niece Mia was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease, a hereditary condition that left her legally blind in a very short time. She is still able to see color, shapes and light, and Mel asked artist friends to make quarter-inch square art, the tiny size giving viewers a sense of the difficulty Mia now has in seeing her world. Just working on the tiny squares was a challenge, and when Mel first handed me the 1/4" chips, I asked, "What the heck am I supposed to do with these?!"  (When we were looking at these at the March Milwaukee ATC meeting, someone dubbed them "quinchies" for quarter-inchies.)

I finally decided on collage using the smallest faces I could find, portraits cut from postage stamps. I used my thinnest paint brush to add some lines and color, and I cut fine print text from a vintage book to glue around the edge. The hardest part was not being able to see clearly what I was doing, not to mention dropping my tiny pieces or having them stick to my fingers while I was working. (I ended up manipulating everything with with the tip of an X-acto blade, because my fingers were just too big and clumsy!)

Museum of Wisconsin Art's New Building

 
My husband and I drove up to West Bend today to drop off my artwork at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, which has a brand new building opening in April 2013. The curator had told me when giving directions that it looked like the prow of a ship and "you can't miss it," and she was right. The building is wedge-shaped, wide on one end and very skinny and pointy on the other.

We didn't get to see much of the interior beyond where we dropped off my art with the registrar, but it looks a lot brighter and spacious than the old building.  We'll be back for the opening weekend, April 6, 2013.  My collage "Once Upon A Time" will be in the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association exhibit there from April 6-June 23, 2013

Valentines & Anti-Valentine ATCs

Belated Happy New Year & Happy Valentine's Day! Life has been busy but I will try to get back to doing more blogging. This past month I made some Valentine & Anti-Valentine ATCs for a Ten Two Studios design team challenge. Three had rotating centers so that they could be both for and against romance. The catch is that you have to have your axis (wire in the one above and string in the two below) exactly centered and firmly attached, or your spinning part will not turn nicely in the opening!

I used the new ATC-sized images that you can buy as a downloadable file at Ten Two Studios and print multiple copies, along with Valentine and Anti-Valentine themed words and Bingo cards.

I didn't have the patience to make more than three of what I started referring to as the Flipping Valentine ATCs, so the rest of my ATCs made for the Milwaukee ATC group's February theme "Love Actually" are more straightforward, with no moving parts!

Warped Milwaukee Fiber Arts Show

I am happy to have my three quilted house squares selected for the 3rd Annual Warped Milwaukee Fiber Arts show organized by the ABK Weaving Center and opening tonight at 6 p.m at the Riverwest Artist Association's Jazz Gallery, 926 E. Center Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The gallery hours are Saturdays from 12-5 p.m. and Tuesday nights from 6-9 p.m. (with live jazz on Tuesdays). There may be additional Sunday hours depending on volunteer availability. And on the last weekend of the show, Sat-Sun Dec 1 & 2 the gallery will be open 12-5 with handmade items available for sale from the show's participants.

I won't be able to attend tonight's opening as I will be at the Milwaukee Short Film Festival for the premiere of the short western that my husband worked on (and which I participated in last spring when they filmed in South Dakota). But if you are in Milwaukee on Nov. 24, 2012, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to do your shopping at Art Vs. Craft, then swing on up to Riverwest to stop by the Jazz Gallery between 12-5 to say hi to me.

Are You Afraid of the Dolls?

Recently I have posted some doll-related images in my Facebook feed (e.g., Barbie doll head gumball dispenser or the jewelry of Margaux Lange), and my friends who commented reacted either with "That is so cool, I want it!" or "That is so creepy, I wish I could unsee it!" So that was the inspiration for this Ten Two Studios Halloween challenge, my altered Altoid tin Little Shrine of Horrors using a lovely selection of dark and creepy images:
 

So when it comes to creepy dolls, do you fall into the category of "Want them!" or "Make them go away!"??? Feel free to leave a comment below!

And I recommend the documentary "Of Dolls and Murder" about miniature crime scenes made in the 1930s & 1940s that are still being used to train police detectives.

I'm Undead and I Vote!

It is time once again for those of us on the Ten Two Studios design team to meet Lisa Vollrath's Halloween challenge. Since it's an election year and I live in a battleground state, I figured some political ATCs were needed, using zombies, witches and a dapper Day of the Dead gent. The initial theme and color scheme were inspired by Steve Hockensmith's latest novel Cadaver in Chief in which the president of the United States is suspected of becoming a zombie.

Inspiration also came from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels which feature a plethora of undead characters including Reg Shoe, the first zombie member of the City Watch and an activist for dead rights. From his Fresh Start Club, we get the slogan "Undead Yes, Unperson No." Pratchett also wrote Equal Rites about a girl who inherits a wizard staff but is told that women can't be wizards.

Although apparently claims of the dead voting are more myth than reality, shouldn't the dead be allowed to vote if they can get themselves to the polls on time? Just think of the years of experience that the undead might bring to elected office! After all, being dead is only the beginning!
