Altered Overall Art Apron

2009_365_129 Altered Overall Art Apron
I'm just getting a head start for Fiber Arts Friday, since I'll be off-line most of the day. My big artsy accomplishment this week (and this isn't saying much) was finally sewing together this work apron recycled from a pair of overalls.

I saw this project by Laura Ryan in the Jan/Feb 2008 issue of Cloth Paper Scissors and thought "Hey, I could do that! I've got a pair of overalls I don't wear anymore" (Think mid-1980s fashion - yes, they're that old :o)

It looks complicated but really, you just cut the front from the back along the side seams, trim off the legs and sew the back face up on top of the front to create a whole lot of pockets! I actually had chopped my old overalls last year, and then they sat forlorn waiting to be sewn together. I did have to add some strips of fabric on the sides to even out the difference in width between the back and front (I didn't cut my seams very evenly). I made the apron ties with strips cut from the legs.

The hard part now is deciding how to decorate it.... And what's going in all those pockets? (Because if I fill them all with tools, I probably won't be able to stand up straight!)

Looks awesome!!!

I've got several pairs of jeans with holes that are too big to be fashionable, maybe I should try something like this!

Thanks, Katie - you could add ATC sized patches :D There's also those Jeans Purse projects - I've wanted to try those with Glen's old jeans.

These are super, Carolyn! Almost makes me want to take out my old "Singer"! Can't wait to see what you do to embellish them. Hugs, Terri xoxo

Thanks for sharing this great idea. I recently ripped a favorite pair of overalls and thought I would have to ditch them. Now, I'll just have to try this instead.

You're so creative!

Thanks, Teri and Katy - recycled overalls make a great apron because you can never have too many pockets :D

Go for needle felting on the pockets. I have some little girl denim skirts to make into purses and needle felt but I haven't gotten round to it.

@Flights of Whimzy - good idea - I hadn't even though of needle felting. Tho' right now I'm debating whether just to take the apron to the art conference I'm going to in June and let everyone else sign and doodle on it.
